Breastfeeding dring pregnancy

It is generally safe to breastfeed during pregnancy, here are some facts that you may wish to learn about:

- Breastfeeding during pregnancy will result in some uterine contractions, but uterine contractions are experienced regularly throughout pregnancy as with exercise or during orgasm.

- Breastfeeding will not necessarily increase the risk of miscarriage, unless she is already at risk for miscarriage during pregnancy. However please pay extra attention and consult doctor if she has experienced miscarriage previously.

- She will need extra rest and will probably feel more fatigued if she continues breastfeeding during pregnancy.

- She will need to eat adequate nutrition to support your breastfeeding relationship and support the nutritional needs of your unborn baby. You may want to consult with a nutritionist to ensure you are eating enough to support both your children's needs, as well as your own.

- Many women who breastfeed during pregnancy find their nipples are more tender than normal. She can try switching the baby's position to help alleviate this discomfort.

- Many women find that their breast milk supply would decrease during their second trimester. You may need to supplement at this point if your baby isn't getting enough nourishment. Other times, the flavor of mother's milk may change around this time, and some babies self wean because they may not like the change. As your son is now 2 years old, the source of the nutrition should be coming from food (a balance diet) instead of mother's milk.

- Proceed gradually regardless of the decision you make. If she does decide to wean she should take her time so as to minimize the impact on the nursing kid.

Through the discussions with nurses of Mother and Child Health Centre, Department of Health, we are given to understand that there is no evidence substantiating the causal relation between breastfeeding and miscarriage.
